Ponte Roma Jersey (also known as Ponte Di Roma) is a double knit jersey fabric which essentially means there are two layers of fabric knitted together with two sets of needles. The name ‘Ponte Di Roma’ roughly translates as Roman Bridge, as the fabric’s structure resembles classic roman bridges - which is where the inspiration for this name came from.
Because of its layers of interlocking knit, this fabric is very stable (less fluid than other jesrsey knits) and holds its shape when you cut it. It is less stretchy than many other jersey dress fabrics which means it’s relatively easy to sew. It doesn’t fray or crumple, as any creases tend to drop out without them even being noticeable and looks similar on both sides. The composition is usually polyester, viscose and spandex in combination – occasionally with other fibres such as wool or silk. The basic polyester/viscose/spandex balance will vary. Fabrics with a higher spandex content will typically have more weight and will stretch more. A higher viscose proportion will enhance the draping qualities and bring much more softness to the handle whereas more polyester generally gives a ponte Roma fabric more structure and durability. Ponte Roma can be printed or plain and comes in a variety of textures too.
Ponte Roma is a thicker fabric and is available in lightweight, midweight and heavyweight varieties. Every garment you create with this fabric will be incredibly flattering, as it creates a more streamlined look with pieces.
