Unravel the mystery of patchwork and quilting and before you know it, you will be hooked on this addictive craft!

Using your own choice of fabrics (see 'Additional Information'), start by learning how to measure and cut using the tools of the trade and confidently constructing your first piece of patchwork. After constructing a traditional nine-patch block, Michelle will show you how to cut it up and rearrange it to produce a disappearing nine-patch pattern.

After quilting your front, complete a cushion cover by adding an envelope back.

Best of all the end result is this beautiful contemporary cushion, made from the smallest pieces of fabric!

No experience in patchwork and quilting is required, however, you must already have some experience on a sewing machine or have attended one of our Beginner sewing workshops.

Based at a Home Studio in Chorlton.

You will need the following materials:

Fabric must be light or medium weight cotton (often sold as craft fabric or quilters’ cotton). Avoid directional patterns (i.e. fabric where you have to keep all the butterflies, for example, one way up), stripes or large patterns - smaller patterns definitely work best. Stretchy, bulky or silky fabrics are not suitable. It's preferable to gently pre-wash the fabric and press it before the class.

3 fat quarters for the patchwork on the front (a fat quarter of fabric is 1/2 the width of the fabric by a 1/2 yard of length - 22" x 18").

50cm for the back of cushion and border (edge of the front).

Sewing thread to blend with fabrics

Wadding suitable for machine quilting 50cm x 50cm. A thinner wadding is recommended (such as the needle- punched cotton blend waddings- 2oz polyester is the thickest recommended.

Machine quilting thread or strong cotton thread.

Please note that cushion inners are not needed for the workshop and can be bought later from John Lewis, Ebay, Abakhan.
