New Dressmaking Workshops

New Dressmaking Workshops

I’ve been working on some new dressmaking workshops to add to our programme and after feedback from our lovely customers, I started with a wrap dress and trouser suit as they were the most requested.

I’m pleased with both, offering new skills to try and suitable for beginner dressmakers but also for advanced by choosing a more challenging fabric.

Both have a wrap front with flattering pleats under the bust and dolman/kimono style sleeves, so easy and comfortable to wear and no setting in sleeves is necessary.

I’ve been wearing the wrap dress for casual day with trainers, but it could be dressed up for evening with heels and I can also see it as a winter garment with tights and a turtleneck.

The wrap front doesn’t gape feeling very secure and the skirt is nice and swishy because of the volume of fabric used.

The mid-weight woven cotton fabric I used give it some body, which worked well and was easy to sew with. I have my eye on this Rayon Challis Fabric from Dashwood Studio which will give a softer drape and be a bit more challenging to sew with.

The first trouser suit I made was in a medium weight knit making it comfortable to wear, and easy to get on and off without the need for a zip. I made it mostly on the overlocker making it quick to sew too and the black version felt suitable for an evening out.

I made the second version in a woven viscose giving it a nice soft drape which along with the print pattern made it a good day wear option too. It would also work well in a mid-weight woven fabric which would give it a bit more body and would be easier to work with compared to viscose.

I was concerned about stretching the front wrap out of shape and creating a gape when getting the trouser suit on and off in the woven version, so I added a concealed zip to be able to get in and out of it easily.

I love wearing styles and look forward to making more in different fabrics and lengths, I hope you like them too and want to make one for yourself. Both can be made in a day and suitable for all skill levels making them an ideal for workshop option. The styles are not yet on sale on the website (it will be autumn when we have a free Saturday to schedule them in), but if you are available on a week-day, please get in touch for more information.
