PATTERN REVIEW THE ABI JUMPSUIT

With an abundance of jumpsuit sewing patterns around at the moment, I was spoilt for choice when I decided to make one. The Zadie Jumpsuit from Paper Theory seemed to be the most popular but it was the Abi Jumpsuit from AK Patterns that caught my eye. The Abi is named after Abi from the Crafty Pinup, you can read her story here. Abi is designed exclusively for knit fabrics. A medium weight knit fabrics with approximately 30% -50% stretch is recommended. I went for a black, polyester knit in a medium weight from Abakhan.

The Abi Jumpsuit is a faux wrap jumpsuit with a three quarter length or short sleeve option. You can also make the trouser part either with a wide leg or a tapered one (with pleats at the waist). Both versions include optional in-seam pockets and a tie belt. I chose to make the three quarter length sleeve, wide legged version in a full length, with pockets but without the tie and made a small adaption to the front.

It is well proportioned and drafted with clear instructions making it easy to make, the only change I made was to the front bodice, it was designed to have darts.

Instead of having darts, I gathered the bottom edge and reduced the overlap to increase the amount of gathers at the front. I liked the gathered front but found I needed to wear a vest underneath as the wrap over didn't cross as high up as I had reduced the overlap.

The pockets were an added bonus and lay well in the fabric, I was concerned they would appear bulky but sat well hidden.

To finish it off, I used my overlocker to do a rolled hem at the sleeve and hem openings.

It is such an easy and comfortable style to wear, my next version is going to be in a bright print for summer holidays. If you want to make your own, you can buy the pattern here. It is a really flattering too, just take a look how wonderful everyone looks in it on Instagram #Abijumpsuit
