If you have never used a sewing machine before (or if you haven’t used one for a while), then this is the course for you!

We have devised a four-week programme of regular evening sessions, designed to give you all the skills you need to begin or progress your journey into the wonderful world of sewing.

Based at The Edge Theatre and Arts Centre in the heart of Chorlton, you’ll find like-minded classmates; expert tutors and The Dressing Room Cafe to grab a cappuccino before your class starts!

Week 1 – Conquer your Sewing Machine

Start by learning the basics, including how to thread a machine, fill a bobbin and sew a variety of stitches, useful for dressmaking and everyday projects. Then learn how to use the seam guides and the reverse function and pivot to sew curves and corners. We’ll cover how to sew a seam and use zig-zag stitch to finish the raw edges, how to change feet and needles and explain the different ones. To top it all off we’ll go through some trouble shooting and show you how to care for your machine.

    Week 2 – Tote Bag

After a quick refresher from week 1, you’ll then use your new skills to sew a handy tote bag. Practise how to sew seams, a hem and straps then learn how to create a base and sides to your bag. We will provide you with all the materials and tools you need for this, with your first make under your belt we know you'll be on a roll!

    Week 3 – Button Up!

This week you’ll sew up a basic cushion cover and learn how to make a buttonhole. For this session you’ll bring your own fabric to match your home décor.

Week 4 – Get to Grips with a Zip!

For your final week, you’ll be tackling how to insert a zip into a lined make-up bag, sewn by your very own hands. All materials will be provided for this session so you don’t need to worry about bringing anything along.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or for those looking to refresh their skills.
