If you are ready to take your sewing to the next level, this course is for you. We have devised a three-week programme of regular evening sessions, designed to build your portfolio of sewing skills to give you the confidence to tackle any sewing project.

Based at Crafts and Makes in the heart of Didsbury, you’ll find like-minded classmates and the chance to grab a tea or coffee before the class starts!

Week 1 - Master concealed/invisible and standard zips

Are you a Zip-a-phobic? Take the challenge out of sewing zips by sharing simple tricks and tips that will give you the confidence to tackle zips head on!
You’ll learn the practical sewing skills and tools needed to sew a regular zip and invisible zip – all used in making up clothes, cushions and bags.

Week 2 & 3 – Piping, gathering, bias binding and waistbands

During the last two weeks, you’ll learn how to cut and join bias strips and turn them into piping and bias binding. Then create a stylish apron, with a waistband and gathered skirt and use your piping to trim your waistband and bias binding to finish your hem. You will bring your own fabric to match your style and will be given instructions in week 1 so you know what to bring.

As this is not a beginner’s workshop, you must already have some experience on a sewing machine or have attended one of our Beginner sewing workshops.

Ministry of Craft customers get 15% off all fabrics in our online shop and 10% discount at Fred Aldous. Discount codes and other offers from our crafty friends will be emailed with your booking confirmation.

If the above date is not suitable or sold out, please have a look at our alternative dates or contact us with the course name and we will get in touch if a place becomes available or when the next date goes on sale.

What to bring for Step by Step: Develop your Sewing Skills

All materials and equipment are supplied for these workshops and are included in the price, except for the following for the apron, in week 2 & 3:

50cm of main fabric for the apron skirt and 75cm of contrasting fabric for the waistband, bias binding and piping. If you want the piping to be in a 3rd fabric so it stands out between the apron skirt and waist band, bring an additional 10cm for this. Please avoid bulky, stretchy or slippery fabrics; light to medium weight woven cotton is ideal.

If you order fabric from our online fabric shop, it will be waiting for you in our classroom on the day of your course.

Sewing thread to match the waistband and bias binding fabric.
