They say everyone has a ‘book in them’ - well we think every stitcher has ‘a quilt in them’ - and this gorgeous patchwork quilt is the ideal way to get started! Perfect as a gift for a new baby or as an indulgent snuggle quilt for those cold winter months, we’ll teach you how to make this gem of a quilt.

Based at Crafts and Makes in the heart of Didsbury, you’ll find like-minded classmates and the chance to grab a tea or coffee before the class starts!

Session One -  Create your quilt top and master the basics of creating patchwork. Our talented tutor Michelle, will guide you through how to measure and cut your fabric accurately, how to get to grips with a rotary cutter and quilters’ square and how to lay out and piece your design together, from your own fabrics, using a four-patch block.

Session Two - Complete piecing of the quilt top, attaching borders. Move onto the skill of quilting and learn how to put together your three layers – the patchwork top, wadding and fabric back – to construct your quilt.

Session Three - Try your hand at straight line quilting to get that classic diamond stitched effect! Learn how to finish your quilt professionally by learning how to create continuous binding (a great skill to know for other projects!) and how to sew and finish your quilt edge.

Session Four º (optional additional 1.5 hours) - An opportunity to finish your quilt if you need a little extra help.

There may be some tasks to complete in-between the sessions at home to make sure your quilt is completed (access to a sewing machine is required).

By the end of the sessions, you will have a gorgeous quilt perfect for use as a baby quilt or lap quilt, measuring 101 cm x 86 cm (40” x 34”).

Please note, this workshop is suitable for complete beginners of patchwork and quilting, however, as this is not a beginner’s sewing workshop, you must already have some experience on a sewing machine or have attended one of our Beginner sewing workshops.

Ministry of Craft customers get 15% off all fabrics in our online shop and 10% discount at Fred Aldous. Discount codes and other offers from our crafty friends will be emailed with your booking confirmation.

If the above date is not suitable or sold out, please have a look at our alternative dates or contact us with the course name and we will get in touch if a place becomes available or when the next date goes on sale.

What to bring for Beginners Patchwork and Quilting: Snuggle or Baby Quilt

You will need to supply your own fabrics for this course. This must be light or medium weight cotton (often sold as craft fabric or quilters’ cotton) – stretchy, bulky or silky fabrics are not suitable.  If you order fabric from our online fabric shop, it will be waiting for you in our classroom on the day of your course.

Session One - You will need the following for the Quilt front:

4 fat quarters for the 4-patch block - a fat quarter is half a metre of fabric, which is cut in half across the length. This gives you a piece of fabric approximately (50cm by 56cm)

1 metre fabric for between the 4-patch blocks (and the binding in the third session)

    Matching sewing thread

Session Two  - these requirements will be discussed at the first session, so if you’re not sure what to get, hold on until then:

1 metre of fabric for the quilt back

Machine quilting thread or strong cotton thread

    Wadding piece 1m by 1.2m

All equipment is supplied for this workshop, however, you do need access to a sewing machine in-between the sessions to complete the quilt at home.

Our sponsors, Janome, supply computerised sewing machines (CLX301) and where required overlockers (6234XL). Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring in your own machines.
